I started writing The New Species in 1977 as part of 'The Coach’s Training' program. A decade passed and a colleague suggested that I write a book. I replied that I had already done so, to which she replied, I mean a trade book, one that many, many people will read, something that explains in part your coaching work.
After a brief exchange, I wrote the book proposal for Negaholics. Another friend and colleague suggested that I send the proposal to his agent, which I did. He found the concept fascinating and subsequently sold the manuscript to Villard, a division of Random House. Negaholics was chosen by Oprah, and became so popular that it sold hundreds of thousands of copies and was published in 14 languages.
The sequel to Negaholics was The Corporate Negaholic containing case stories about our Organizational Development work over 20 years that illustrates the connection between people’s behavior from their family of origin to the corporate environment. In 1993, I published, Inner View, to support women in taking responsibility for their health by tracking the causes and effects of the ups and downs in daily life.
I received significant National and International notoriety and public recognition in 1998 when If Life is a Game, These are the Rules was published. This was primarily since I accessed the universal truths that connect all people in the essence of what it means to be human in this book. This Life book has such universal appeal that it is now published in over 40 languages worldwide.
The recent series of books that I have written address
natural transitions in human development. As a person grows, there are normal and expected transitions that by their very nature are uncertain, unsettling, and unclear. Those transitions are: becoming an adult, finding your career or calling, compatible partnering, becoming a parent, and growing older.
Successful transit through these rites of passage is a large part of our development as adults. Each transition has its own universal truths that transcend gender, nationality, race, and religion. I wrote these books to provide handrails for people to help clarify and guide them through the uncertainties they face and to sort out their personal evolution as a result of each transition.
Writing a book is not done with the wave of a wand. It takes time to reflect and soul search for the universal truths related to each developmental phase. Writing a book is like birthing a baby. It grows at it’s own pace and time. As I write about human evolution, my own development as a writer comes from listening, reality checking, and alternating from going within and then documenting. Creating structure, then flow, sprinkled with inspiration, coupled with tools and techniques is a delicate balance. If Life is a Game has been touted as a “masterpiece of the genre” which only happens with attention to every detail.
